Refining, Petrochemicals, Chemicals Domain

The refining, petrochemical and chemical industries transform fossil and alternative resources into products that are essential to the functioning of modern societies.

Faced with climate and economic challenges, these industries are reinventing themselves to balance competitiveness, process safety, and the reduction of their environmental footprint.

Macroeconomic challenges

Strategic industries at the heart of global trade

The refining, petrochemical and chemical sector is a pillar of the global economy, supplying products essential to numerous industrial sectors (transportation, construction, healthcare, consumer goods).

Demand remains strong, particularly in emerging economies, where population and industrial growth are driving consumption.

At the same time, these markets are highly exposed to volatility in raw material prices and geopolitical tensions.

The investments required to modernize facilities and reduce the carbon footprint are substantial, against a backdrop of increased competition and regulatory pressure. The shift toward a more circular economy is also redefining value chains.

Technological Challenges

Toward more efficient, low-carbon processes

Refining, petrochemical, and chemical facilities must evolve to meet performance, flexibility, and sustainability requirements. Operators are investing in the optimization of existing processes (improved yields, energy efficiency), as well as in the development of innovative technologies:

  • CO2 capture and storage,
  • process electrification,
  • use of low-carbon hydrogen.

The integration of new feedstocks, such as biomass or recycled plastics, is a key driver of transformation. Furthermore, the increased use of digital technologies (modeling, simulation, artificial intelligence) enables the optimization of unit operations and enhances plant safety.
